I pray this week strengthens you. May the Lord level every mountain standing in your way. Amen.
Life moves through many different stages. Each season brings its own unique emotions. We naturally rejoice when things fall into pleasant places. However, difficult circumstances can often disturb our inner peace.
You do not need to hide your emotional turmoil. The Psalmist provides a healthy example for us today. He honestly acknowledged his internal heaviness. He asked a vital question: “Why are you downcast?”
“Why, my soul, are you downcast? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God.” — Psalm 42:5 (NIV)
Psalm 42 offers a clear strategy for any crisis. First, acknowledge your pain. Next, interrogate your soul. Finally, preach God’s character to yourself.
You often understand your heart better than anyone else. Therefore, you are in the best position to speak hope. Do not wait for an outside word. Instead, exhort your soul with the truth right now.
Confront your shifting feelings with God’s unchanging character. This exercise is called spiritual reframing. Remind your heart what your mind already knows.
Today, speak directly to your soul. Command it to hope because God has a proven track record. It is well with my soul! Is it well with yours?
