Our Story, Vision and Mission

Our History

Word of Life Church Ashington began in October 2010, when Rev. Michael and Lindsey Hedley, together with Milly and Sid Little, founded the church in response to a divine calling. During a prayer retreat, a group of Christians affirmed the vision that God placed in Michael’s heart. From the beginning, the church focused on teaching the Bible and building faith in both new and mature believers across the North East of England and beyond.

At first, the gatherings included Sunday evening services, prayer groups, and Bible studies. Despite limited advertising, the church grew quickly. As a result, many people experienced answered prayers, transformation, and new faith in Christ. Today, Word of Life Church Ashington remains passionate about gospel preaching and discipleship. Furthermore, it continues to impact the community while faithfully representing Jesus Christ.

In February 2015, the church joined the Wesleyan Reform Union and established its permanent location on North Seaton Road. Since then, the ministry has continued to grow under a dedicated leadership team: Rev. Michael and Lindsey Hedley (Senior Pastors), Lanre and Fisayo Atanda (Pastors), Denis and Jen Batey (Elders), Olaronke Gbadebo (Elder), and Brian and Hazel Watson (Deacons).

In addition, the church operates as a registered charity and makes its financial reports publicly available. Above all, its mission remains rooted in prayer, biblical truth, and community outreach. Looking ahead, the congregation moves forward with renewed enthusiasm and hope for the post-Covid future.

Our Vision

To see lives transformed by the love and truth of Jesus Christ — building a vibrant, Spirit-empowered community where people are healed, discipled, and equipped to shine as salt and light in Ashington and beyond.

Our Mission

At the heart of everything we do is the desire to reflect the love and truth of Jesus Christ in every area of life. Our mission is to:

  • Preach the Gospel of salvation in Christ Jesus — reaching out with compassion to the lost, the lonely, and the hurting in our community.
  • Disciple those who have committed to following Christ — helping believers grow deeper in their relationship with Him.
  • Teach the truth of God’s Word — so that everyone may come to understand their identity in Christ Jesus and the power they have through the Holy Spirit.
  • Bear witness to the grace of God — by living out our faith in our homes, schools, workplaces, and neighborhoods.
  • Be salt and light in Ashington and beyond — demonstrating the love of Christ through our actions and relationships.
  • Foster a safe, honest, and loving environment — where Christians are cherished and supported, and those exploring faith feel welcomed and valued.
